OLD KINDERHOOK VINEYARD AND
HUDSON-CHATHAM WINERY

Danielle Palleshi of Chatham has been an invaluable help to us. She and her husband Peter have a small vineyard in Kinderhook. There's about 150 or so plants. Danielle and Peter have asked us to take over management of their vineyard, Old Kinderhook Vineyard, even while they themselves have remained very much involved. This fall, we'll make the first wine from this established vineyard.

These are pictures of Steve Casscles, our consultant winemaker, pruning the vineyard this spring. Pruning is a very ugly event, in which we take most of the previous year's growth, and cut it off. Expereinced vineyard workers and winemakers know where to cut. Most of the plant will grow back. The idea is that you do not want too much growth. You want the plant to focus on making fewer, better berries. Pruning helps accomplish this.

This new venture with Danielle and Peter serves two purposes to us: 1. The more winemakers we know the more we hear, "The wine in made in the vineyard." Steve's cutting of the vines, and Dominique's management will help bring this vineyard into readiness for winemaking. And 2. We're very excited to bring this mature vineyard online, as we try more and more to reach out to local agriculture. Local is important to us.

Of course, the eciting part is that next year we'll have a locally made product to represent Kinderhook, and further connect ourselves with the local communities, which is also incredibly important to us.

At the Hudson-Chatham Winery we will be sponsoring a great BBQ event with two of the region's and the state's best meat producers Trowbridge Angus and Grazin' Angus Acres. Both have national reputations. And to add to that mix we have the THE DIGITS from Athens, New York, a popular bar band which plays regularly throughout the state.

The Saturday of Father''s Day Weekend, will be the date for this event. Order up grilled chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers or steaks! Or order a cheese plate! Share a glass or bottle of wine.
Listen to the great acoustic and rock'n'roll, and relax!

GRAZIN' ANGUS ACRES

Dan Gibson is the owner of Grazin' Angus Acres. Grazin' Angus Acres is committed to raising the finest quality registered Black Angus in a sustainable 800 acre eco-friendly environment. Our registered Black Angus enjoy the rolling lush hills of northern Columbia County, NY as they graze large pastures of high protein grasses. Grazin' is the first in the region ("The farm with the windmill") to harness the area's natural wind power for a large percentage of electrical needs and Grazin's grass fed chickens provide the farm's nitrogen needs in addition to the best eggs available. Furthering our eco-friendly efforts, Grazin's offerings are locally raised exclusively for our local NY market.

TROWBRIDGE ANGUS

The middle son of the Trowbridge Family, Phil, after growing up on the family farm, went on to Alfred State College and earned his degree in 1976, where he majored in Animal Science. The day after graduation he reported to work as a herdsman at Gallagher’s Angus Farm in Ghent — a fledgling business owned by restaurateur and entrepreneur Jerome “Jerry” Brody. Now, more than 30 years later, Phil, his wife Annie, and their two children, P.J. and Amy own and operate their own family Trowbridge Angus operation in Ghent, NY, on the eastern part of NY state, where the Trowbridge Angus legacy is getting stronger and stronger every day.

Throughout his career, Phil has dedicated himself to elevating the Angus breed to new heights of greatness. Known for his sharp instincts and keen eye, he has a track record of recognizing a calf ’s potential and spotting the breed’s most valued individuals. According to an industry expert, “In a short time, Trowbridge completely revitalized the grand old tradition of Angus families from a new and innovative perspective. It’s no accident that Trowbridge Angus Farm’s animals are considered to be an elite herd of super cattle, legendary in the industry.”

THE DIGITS

A popular band from Athens, NY. Born simply of an acoustic duo, the digits soon evolved into something not of this earth with their killer mix of music from the 1970's to the PRESENT hits. "A great mix of current and the best classic material that will leave you just blown away".The approach is simple…give it all you've got and the good news will travel. The band does electric and what we call 'hot' acoustic shows. What is that? Essentially it's our standard electric set list done on acoustic guitars and usually a small drum kit (the monkey kit)Classic Covers:the Who, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, the Beatles,ZZ Top, David Bowie, John Cougar Mellencamp, Van Halen, and U2.also modern rock from bands such as:Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots, the Strokes, REM, Collective Soul, Lenny Kravitz, Filter, the White Stripes, Train, Presidents of the USA, Oasis, and much, much more!

HUDSON-CHATHAM WINERY SEYVAL BLANC REVIEW BY LENNDEVOURS.COM

February 05, 2008
Hudson-Chatham Winery 2006 Seyval Blanc
by Lenndevours

Today I'd like to introduce you to a winery that you probably aren't familiar with, Hudson-Chatham Winery in town of Ghent New York's Hudson River Valley. It's one of the region's newest producers and one that I know that I find personally inspiring .

Why? Well, Nena and I talk all the time about moving to upstate New York, buying and old farm house, renovating it and making a home for our family there.

Carlo and Dominique DeVito, owners of Hudson-Chatham Winery have just that...and they've planted a small vineyard to boot. The grapes aren't quite ready for winemaking, but in another year or two, they will be.

I've known Carlo for several years now, predating the vineyard or winery, through his blog East Coast Wineries. Carlo, a writer/author/editor, is a bit of a kindred spirit because of his undying interest in and support for East Coast wine.

This Hudson-Chatham Winery 2006 Seyval Blanc ($11), is labeled under the New York AVA, but it's made from grapes grown in the Hudson Valley. Very pale yellow in the glass, the nose isn't overly expressive, but offers some sauvignon blanc-like aromas, including grapefruit, lemon and minerals. Seyval blanc often leads to lean wines, but I'd consider this one medium-light bodied. Tart bordering on sour, it's citrusy like the nose with an appealing wet-stone minerality. The finish is medium-long with a sour apple note that I didn't love. The nice acid backbone makes it taste very fresh and lively. It's very close to being really tasty, but that little bit of tartness that crosses over to sour keeps it in the category of summer sipper. Still, it's one of the better seyval blancs I've tasted.
